Digital Storytelling: The Next Killer App

Abstract:
The emergence of digital media and networking has had enormous implications in the variety, spontaneity, and depth of personal communications.  Twenty years ago I spoke of and managed research on the “Third Age of Video”.   The concept was that ordinary people would have the tools and the access to communication facilities that would enable them to produce and distribute personal videos and films that would be as compelling and engaging as those developed by the media industry.   We begin to see this today with topical “blogs”.  This is only the tip of the iceberg which has been broadly referred to as digital storytelling.

In this presentation I will share examples of digital stories and review the tools and workflow associated with producing them.   As one begins to think of digital storytelling as the next “killer app”, communication planners and engineers should be mindful of the need for full duplex, wideband communication to the office, home, and mobile unit.
